Observe the mitzvah of mezuzah with this fantastic mezuzah scroll from the Land of Israel:

  • Written according to the Ashkenazi tradition, each scroll is inscribed on kosher parchment by a skilled scribe.
  • To ensure its quality, each scroll is proofread twice, once by an expert scribe and once by a computer program.
  • Will make a meaningful addition to any mezuzah case in your home!!!

Halachic Source

The mitzvah (commandment) of mezuzah comes directly from the Torah, in the Shema passages:

  • Deuteronomy 6:9“And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and upon your gates.”

  • Deuteronomy 11:20“And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and upon your gates.”

Halachically, this means that a klaf (parchment scroll) containing the Shema Yisrael and Vehaya im shamoa paragraphs, written by a qualified scribe, must be affixed to the doorposts of a Jewish home.

Purpose and Meaning

  1. Fulfilling a mitzvah – It is a direct Torah commandment, and placing a mezuzah on each qualifying doorway is a way of sanctifying the home.

  2. Reminder of faith – The mezuzah serves as a constant reminder of God’s unity, love, and the obligation to live according to the Torah, as the Shema emphasizes.

  3. Protection (shmirah) – While the mezuzah is not a “good luck charm,” Jewish tradition teaches that it brings divine protection to the home and its inhabitants. The name of God (Shaddai) written on the reverse side of the parchment is understood as standing for Shomer Daltot Yisrael (“Guardian of the doors of Israel”).

Halachic Details

  • A mezuzah is required on every doorway of a Jewish home (with some exceptions, such as bathrooms).

  • It must be affixed on the right-hand doorpost, as one enters the room.

  • The mezuzah is placed in the upper third of the doorpost, tilted inward toward the home.

  • A blessing is recited when affixing it.
